Visits were made to Havana, Trinidad, Cienfuegos, the Bay of Pigs area, and to a number of UNESCO World Heritage sites. Participants stayed at a hotel in Havana and in homes of local residents in Trinidad. We used a tour bus to travel between the various destinations.
Special stops were made at Finca La Vigia, Ernest Hemingway’s former home, at Fusterlandiia, the studio and residence of Cuban artist Jose Fuster, and at the Colon Cemetery with its elaborately sculpted memorials. We particularly enjoyed visits to the Havana Fine Arts Museum and the Gion Museum at the Bay of Pigs. A Havana University professor briefed our group on Cuban health care and education.
Much enjoyed were the many delicious meals at local paladars (private restaurants), the musical serenades throughout the trip and our drive in the vintage 1950s convertible cars the night prior to our return to New York City.
