DR. VALERIE OKON OBOT
REGIONAL NGO COORDINATOR SUBSAHARAN AFRICA
Currently, I have focused on creating awareness of the NGO/DPI Executive Committee and providing information, advice and guidance to NGOs interested in association with the United Nations Department of Public Information. Three Nigerian NGOs have indicated interest in DPI/NGO association.
I have been in contact with the immediate past Regional NGO Coordinator, Dr. Eleanor Nwadinobi, who is providing mentoring support for my activities as Regional Coordinator. Our NGO, the Medical Women Association of Nigeria (MWAN), an affiliate of the Medical Women International Association (MWIA), has been in existence for over thirty seven years and provides a means of communication and co-operation between medical women across the globe, affording opportunities for women to meet and discuss issues concerning their health and the well being of humanity. MWAN participated in the activities of the International Women’s Day, which included creating awareness on women’s health in workshops organized in Lagos, Nigeria.
I plan to access our directory of sub-Saharan Africa NGOs associated with DPI/NGO and establish contact with them in order to promote the goals and programs of the United Nations Department of Public Information. I also have identified potential NGO recruits in Ghana and will continue to search for others in the region.
